Obsessive Consumption = Kate Bingaman-Burt

Over the holiday break I got the pleasure to meet the wonderful Kate Bingaman-Burt and her husband, Clifton, in the great state of Mississippi.

Kate is the creator of Obsessive Consumption which is a collection of daily drawings of her daily purchases. She helps with a non-profit design firm that her husband started, has had multiple big-city gallery shows, teaches at Mississippi State University, has been featured in many books, and still has time to sleep (I think)!

If you want the full list of her awesomeness, visit her website!

Maira Kalman

How can I describe Maira Kalman? She is a fascinatingly original, simple-minded (in the best sense of the term) creative illustrator, story-teller, speaker, and day dreamer that lives and creates in New York City.

She recently came out with a new book entitled "The Principals of Uncertainty" (based on a series she did for the New York Times) which I just finished reading. I would recommend that everyone pick up this book and read it in one sitting!

Erik Nitsche

As a huge fan of mid-century graphic design (ala Brodovitch, Rand, Beall, etc.) I have just been introduced to the stunning work of Erik Nitsche - and I am amazed that I had not learned of him earlier! His work, especially for General Dynamics, is energetic, colorful, and wonderfully structured.

For a good introduction, Steven Heller has written a great essay about Nitsche here.

Jason Munn = The Small Stakes

I have been a fan of Jason Munn/The Small Stakes for quite some time now, but after finding this interview, I realized that I have never posted anything about him or his work. He always has great concepts that are well executed.

I love you all. It has been a wonderful semester. Just don't go back to your old habits of using Futura for everything - I will hunt you down if you do!

Two New Letterpressed Posters

I guess I have to toot my own horn on this one, but I have two new letterpressed posters for sale at Keep Calm!

One poster, "Make Your Own Path" is printed with deep-red ink on antique maps that I have collected over the years. Each print is different and unique! UPDATE: The "Make Your Own Path" prints have sold out in just two days! That must be some sort of record! Thanks to all who ordered so quickly!

The other poster, "Home Sweet Home" is printed with brown ink on nice French Kraft paper with a cute diamond border. You can see more photos of the new posters on my Flickr account.

Also, my "Good Morning Sunshine" poster has sold out at Keep-Calm! Thanks to all who purchased this print!

I am happy to announce that a Holiday Edition of my Blind Boxes is available for purchase though Coudal's Gifted! They call it: Stuff Made By People Like Us For Other People Like Us To Buy For People Like Them. Which I only half understand, but I like it!

Each box has a large variety of found and collected ephemera and a vintage Christmas card on the top. You can view additional photos on my Flickr account.

Student Field Notes Fall 2007

I teach Advanced Typography at Missouri State University and at the beginning of the semester, I gave each of my students a Field Notes to fill with whatever their little hearts desired.

It was not an assignment because I wanted to see how creative they could be without the pressure of grading. Some of them filled them just to fill, but others really put a great deal of work and love into their Field Notes. Enjoy!
